Profile

Tony Luu was born on an overcrowded wooden refugee boat that was fleeing his troubled homeland of Vietnam. His family eventually settled in Brisbane where Tony was given his first super 8 camera at the age of 9, but could never afford to actually run film though it. In the following year, the family borrowed a brand new video 8 camera from a relative with which Tony was to shoot his first masterpiece- his sisters wedding. Tony’s destiny was settled that day.

Over the last 17 years, he has has racked up an impressive list of credits which include hundreds of TVCs for clients such as Unilever, Kelloggs, Pepsi and Telstra. Tony has also shot more than 100 music videos for in a credit list that reads like a “whos who” of the Australian music industry including artists like Silverchair, Jessica Mauboy, George and Eskimo Joe. In 2005, Tony photographed his first feature film, 48 Shades. In 2008 Tony shot his second feature Storage.  Tony is currently in pre-production on his next film The Merger.

Since becoming a DOP, Luu has picked up numerous awards, winning Best Cinematography at Tropfest 2006 as well as more than 40 Australian Cinematographer Society Awards and 5 prestigious Golden Tripods. Tony was awarded ACS accreditation in 2009. His energetic and creative approach to collaborating with the director allows him to fulfill the visual potential any motion picture project. With a sharp eye for lighting, Tony specialises in bold and graphic frames that accentuate the story.
